How to choose an AI companion: 6 things that matter

There are a lot of AI companion apps now, and they are not all the same. Most of the difference comes down to six things. Run any app you are considering through this quick checklist before you settle in.

1. Honesty about being AI

The companion should be open that it is an AI persona and never pretend to be a real person or promise to meet you. Honesty is not a downside, it is what lets you actually relax into the conversation.

2. Real memory

It should remember your name, what you like, and what you talked about last time. Without memory, every chat resets and nothing ever builds.

3. A believable personality

The best companions have a distinct voice, interests, and quirks, so it feels like talking to someone specific rather than a blank assistant.

4. Tasteful by default

A warm, fade-to-black register keeps the character believable and the platform on trustworthy payment rails. Graphic-everything tends to flatten the experience.

5. No dark patterns

No fake likes, no guilt-tripping, no manufactured cliffhangers to milk you for credits. Pricing should be clear and up front.

6. Real privacy

Your chats should stay private and be deletable in one click. If you cannot wipe your data easily, walk away.
